Rated 92 Points from James Suckling & 91 Points from The Wine Enthusiast at the original release price of $40, the Chateau de Pitray Castillon Premier Vin 2016 is one of the best values in Right-Bank Bordeaux. Crafted in a perfect vintage, James Suckling has said about these petit Chateau that "you can buy just about anything bottled in Bordeaux in the 2016 vintage from the simplest Bordeaux to the grandest of classified growths or trophy wines from the Right Bank and be assured you’re getting a top-quality wine." The only issue is it's getting exceedingly rare to still find any 2016 Bordeaux on the market for this price, let alone one made by a Right Bank winemaking rock-star Nina Mitjaville, who grew up amid the vines and began working at her family estate, Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf ($200+), from the age of 15. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the eastern edge of Saint-Emilion, which offers lots of ripe black fruits and licorice notes to go with a medium-bodied, nicely textured style. It's unheard of to score a 2016 Bordeaux at this price. Don't miss it!
"Aromas of glossy, spicy oak and plush, ripe dark plums with hazelnut and tarry nuances, too. The flavorful palate delivers in assertive and bold style with a juicy and intense surge of fruit, holding long into the finish. Try from 2022." James Suckling, 92 Points
"A concentrated wine from the Pitray family, who fought in the American Revolution, this has bold tannins and the potential for rich fruit. A powerful wine, it shows plenty of spice as well as ripe black-currant flavors and acidity. Editor's Choice." The Wine Enthusiast, 91 Points
