The epicenter of value wines in is Portugal, with more "Best Buy" distinctions than France, Spain, South America and even the United States. For the price, these wines rarely disappoint. The top wine on the Wine Enthusiast recent list, Quinta dos Aciprestes Douro Red 2021. It started when The Wine Spectator dedicated two cover features to red wines from the Douro, asking whether or not Portugal could bring their wines to a "Grand Cru" level. Later that year, 3 of Wine Spectator's Top 5 were from the Douro. Today, Portugal is a leader in elegant, full-bodied premium reds. An old vines blend of native varietals: Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional aged 12 months in French oak barrels, Quinta dos Aciprestes is wine of power and intensity, full on the palate, with very soft, polished tannins and a long, warm finish. Tasted blind, you would think this is a $50 California Cabernet Sauvignon!
"This dramatic vineyard on the south bank of the Douro and marked by cypress trees, has produced a full-bodied, dense wine. Truffle and chocolate aromas give a dense wine, still young. Drink this fine wine from 2026. Best Buy." The Wine Enthusiast, 92 Points
