Taking Santa Barbara by storm, it's been 20 years since Joey Tensley started making vineyard designated wines as a side project from his "day job" as winemaker for Beckmen Vineyards. He obtained cult status when Matt Kramer added two of his 2001's to The Wine Spectator's Top Ten list. Rich and deep with decadent notes of chocolate and black fruits, the palate is round and velvety with a long, lingering finish. Look for hints of vanilla from the 20 percent new French oak. If you love big, ripe, full-bodied reds, you must try Tensley's Colson Canyon Syrah.
"The 2023 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard comes from great vineyard (which is owned and farmed by Tensley) located in the hills above Los Olivos. Darker red and blue fruits, dried flowers, sandalwood, and peppery, spicy notes all shine here, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a balanced mouthfeel, fine tannins, and outstanding length. This cuvée always benefits from bottle age, and I don’t expect the 2023 to be any different." Jeb Dunnuck, 94-96 Points
