Rioja has long been Spain's blue-chip region and remains a source for great value if you know where to look. Such is the case for the Tobia Seleccion de Autor 2019, a modern styled red that some critics have described as a total fruit bomb. A fourth-generation grape grower in Rioja, Oscar Tobia started out as a garagiste, making only a few barrels from his family's local farm. Now he has 80 hectares spread across 15 different communes, and a state-of-the-art winery that kicked off commercial production in 2010. His "Seleccion de Autor" comes from 35-100 year old vines in Rioja Alta, that was given 92 points in back-to-back vintages from Wine Spectator, and 93 points from the Wine Enthusiast, the highest ever rating for this wine.
"Dark ruby to the eye, this wine offers aromas of blackberry, baking spice and toasted hazelnut. Bold tannins are wrapped around black-cherry, plum, anisette, vanilla-bean and cocoa-powder flavors. As tannins drift away deep fruit flavors remain on the taste buds." The Wine Enthusiast, 93 Points
"The plush texture of this aromatic, lightly spiced red carries a generous range of plum skin, ripe black currant, dried thyme, cocoa powder and mineral notes. Lively and well-structured, with firm, integrated tannins, this shows good length and balance. Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha. Drink now through 2034." The Wine Spectator, 92 Points
