Searching for the perfect Halloween party wine? Vinyes Ocults Malbec is a dead ringer for a $50+ Napa Valley red, and the winemaking and story behind this bottle is the reason we love searching the world for these small production gems. Winemaker Tomas Stahringer is a garagiste in the most literal sense, starting out with only two barrels and 500 bottles in his parents garage. It was a side gig from his daytime job at Bodega Polo but was an immediate hit with collectors which encouraged him to expand production. He still only produces less than 2,000 total cases. Full-bodied with rich aromas of blackberries and wild raspberries makes for a pure, fruited Malbec with a fresh, lithe and silky palate that offers ripe blueberry flavors which integrate with 12 months of French oak. The label is pretty awesome too!
"The 2020 Malbec from Los Chacayes, Uco Valley was aged for 12 months in used barrels and is a dark purple hue. The attractively pure, bold nose displays plum, violet and lavender notes with secondary aromas from the aging process. In the mouth, it’s fairly smooth with gentle, juicy tannins and a tart, precise freshness that lends tension. The 2020 is a rewarding wine." Vinous Media, 92 Points
"Tomás Stahringer planted this vineyard 13 years ago, on the terraces of the Las Tunas River in the Uco Valley, and today it's the base of some of his best wines. This 100% malbec comes from that vineyard, planted on highly permeable soils with small gravel in a very cool climate that produces grapes with juicy red flavors, firm texture, and a bit of warmth from the alcohol, while still being fresh and vibrant." "Enticing aromas of cedar and violets lead to a full-bodied and smooth palate. There is a good amount of black fruit and herbs in this wine. It's juicy and has a solid structure holding it all together." The Wine Enthusiast, 90 Points
