The Castello d'Alba wines are produced by Rui Roboredo Madeira and Joao Matos who formed their Vinhos Douro Superior wine company in 1999. From the heart of the famed Douro wine region, VDS painstakingly selects grapes from the best soils alongside the limestone, schist riverbeds of the Douro river to their higher altitude vineyards in Freixo de Numao. An old vines blend of native varietals: Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional aged 12 months in French oak barrels, Castello d'Alba is wine of power and intensity, full on the palate, with very soft, polished tannins and a long, warm finish. Tasted blind, you would think this is a $40 California Cabernet Sauvignon!
"This wood-aged wine is rich, packed with tannins and a solid structure. It has a spicy character giving density and aging potential. It is a full wine, with black fruits still vivid and forward. Drink from 2025." The Wine Enthusiast, 90 Points Best Buy
