Famed New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov has written on several occasions that most wines have their seasonal associations. Rose in the summer, Rieslings in spring, and Chateauneuf du Pape in the fall. Thankfully, the cooler weather is right around the corner and The Wine Buyer is excited to once again feature one of our favorites, the Domaine Les Escondudes 2019, made by the famed co-op of Le Cellier des Princes. The name Escondudes comes from the Spanish word Escondidas meaning "hidden" in reference to the special, little hidden valley where the vineyard of Domaine Les Escondudes is located. Thanks to its rocky soil with large round pebbles, its grape varieties and its traditional winemaking method, the Domaine des Escondudes offers an elegant tannic structure. Mostly Grenache, with a dollop of Syrah and Mourvedre, it's a full-bodied but balanced wine that highlights rich, easing black fruit flavors edged by a delicate coating of licorice flavors and spices.
"One hundred percent Grenache, vinified and matured only in stainless steel, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine les Escondudes is concentrated and dark-fruited, with purple raspberries and a hint of floral, tea-like notes on the nose. In the mouth, it's full-bodied, supple, creamy, lush and long. Impressive." The Wine Advocate, 93 Points
