A brilliant effort from Bordeaux legend Jean-Luc Thunevin and up and coming superstar Jean-Roger Calvet, the 2019 Thunevin-Calvet Cuvee Constance has been called a dead ringer for ready-to-drink Chateauneuf du Pape! Thunevin rose to immediate fame with Chateau Valandraud, his garagiste project in Saint Emilion, when Robert Parker compared his Bordeaux to the established classified growths. It's only fitting that the winemaking duo launched this project from a garage in an alley in the Cotes du Roussillon. Focusing on vineyards in Maury's famed black schist soils, this area of Southern France is warm and rugged like Chateauneuf du Pape, producing wines that are equally dark and brooding. Since the early 2000s, this project has grown to a 65-hectare estate where Thunevin and Calvet can control production. Robert Parker has given the Cuvee Constance 90+ points since inception and it's one of our most popular French wines the past five years!
"The 2019 Constance is fresh and vibrant, with black raspberry fruit as well as notes of chalky minerality, ground pepper, garrigue, and sandalwood. It too has a savory, nicely structured style on the palate, with notable tannins, and is going to evolve for 5-7 years. It's a solid step up over the 2018." Jeb Dunnuck, 91 Points
"A fruity red with sweet cherries, red plums, dried spices and a hint of coffee on the nose. Medium-bodied with firm tannins. Structured, but has good fruit to support the tannins. Spicy finish. Drink now." James Suckling, 90 Points
"The entry-level offering, the tank-aged 2019 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Constance is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan. Marked by scents of green peppercorns, blackberries and raspberries, it's full-bodied, rich and velvety, with ample length on the finish. For $15, it's a steal." The Wine Advocate, 90 Ponts
