Over the past several years, The Wine Buyer has featured several outstanding Rioja Riserva's just starting to hit their peak drinking window. These are our favorite types of wines, because instead of having to wait a few years for the bottles to fully mature, these beauties are ready to pop, pour and enjoy. Such is the case for the Finca la Emperatriz from Vinedos Hermanos Hernaiz. Their 2014 Reserva comes from a historic vineyard once owned by the Empress of France, at the very edge of the Rioja Alta appellation. It's the ideal terroir for producing fine, elegant, and traditional Rioja with amazing cellaring potential. The brothers call the 2014 "personality in its purest form." We call it simply outstanding for the price, and by far the best $20 Rioja we've tasted in 2021!
""A blend of Tempranillo with 3% Garnacha, 2% Viura and 1% Graciano fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts matured in 70% American and 30% French oak barrels for 22 months. It was my favorite from the selection I tasted. I found it serious, balanced and nicely integrated, with the oak neatly folded into the fruit, subtle and elegant. It's medium-bodied with good freshness and very fine tannins." The Wine Advocate, 93 Points
